The work will take place during a full weekend closure between junctions 9 (A243 Leatherhead) and 10 (A3 Wisley) from 9pm on Friday 10 May to 6am on Monday 13 May 2024.

National Highways decided to close the M25 motorway for the first time in March. The closure, which involved the demolition of a bridge and the installation of a gantry, was completed eight hours ahead of schedule.

However, the upcoming closure will impact a different section of the M25. The motorway will be shut between Junction 9 (A243 Leatherhead) and Junction 10 (A3 Wisley) from 9pm on Friday, May 10th 2024 until 6am on Monday, May 13th 2024.

This closure is necessary to lift concrete beams for the eastern gyratory bridge and another large gantry. National Highways are urging drivers to only travel if absolutely essential and to allow extra time for their journeys if they must use the M25.

The Junction 10 improvement scheme is designed to improve safety and traffic flow at this busy junction. It will see an increase in the number of lanes, a new junction layout, and improvements to allow easier and safer entry and exit from the M25. The project is also expected to reduce pollution caused by traffic congestion.

This is just the second of five planned full weekend closures on the M25 this year, with three more expected between July and the end of 2024.

Signposted diversion routes will be in place for the duration of the closure. These routes will vary depending on the direction of travel and the height of your vehicle.

Project schedule and traffic levels

The carriageway between Junctions 9 and 11 typically carries between 4,000 and 6,000 vehicles per hour in each direction during peak weekend hours (10am-9pm). Up to 270,000 vehicles use this junction every weekday, making it one of the busiest stretches of road in the UK.

This phase of work is crucial to keep the project on schedule for completion by Summer 2025. The dates of future closures may be subject to change, with the third closure to be announced following the completion of the current works on May 13th.

It’s important to note that this closure coincides with other roadworks on the National Highways network, including the installation of additional emergency areas on various stretches of the M25, M4, and M3 motorways.
