[UPDATE] More traffic restrictions in Austria: Salzburg bans congestion and announces A10 closures

While Tyrol's restrictions on HGV traffic continue to cause disruption, the Austrian region of Salzburg is taking a unique approach: banning traffic jams on a key motorway. Additionally, roadworks are planned on the same motorway, further complicating travel.

Updated on 14th May

On 13th May the Hallein District Council introduced an amendment to the Road Closure Ordinance, which came into force on the date of publication (13th May).

The amendment concerns the Puch-Urstein junction (No. 11). Instead of a driving ban in both directions, it is now forbidden to enter the Urstein Süd roundabout from the adjacent road in the direction of Villach.

The same applies to the Hallein junction (no. 16), where instead of a two-way traffic prohibition, it is forbidden to enter the adjacent road in the direction of Villach, L 107 Wiestal Landesstraße (roundabout).

On Monday, May 6, authorities in St. Johann and Pongau (Salzburg) issued an ordinance prohibiting traffic jams on the Tauern motorway (A10). This ban is in effect until June 30th, 2024.

Traffic jam ban details:

  • When travelling towards Salzburg, drivers are prohibited from entering the L229 Affenwenger Landesstraße at the HASt Pfarrwerfen-Werfen junction (exit 44).
  • Exemptions are granted to vehicles with destinations within the Salzburg region.

Additional restrictions:

  • Exiting the A10 towards Salzburg via the ASt Eben im Pongau (exit 60) onto the B99 Katschberg Straße is prohibited.
  • Exiting the Landzeit network stations (Gasthof Nord and Gasthof Süd) onto bordering municipal roads is prohibited, with the exception of vehicles with destinations within Salzburg.

A10 closures in May

Renovation work is underway on five tunnels along the 14-kilometre stretch of the A10 between Golling and Werfen. This extensive project involves the Ofenauer and Hiefler tunnels, as well as the Werden tunnel chain (Brentenberg, Zetzenberg, Helbersberg). The Tauern and Katschberg tunnels are not currently affected.

These works necessitate closures on the A10 throughout May, leading to traffic disruptions.

Closure schedule:

  • Northbound (Salzburg): Pongau Junction to Pass Lueg – Monday, May 13th (8 pm) to Tuesday, May 14th (5 am).
  • Southbound (Villach): Golling to Pass Lueg:
    • Monday, May 27th (8 pm) to Tuesday, May 28th (5 am).
    • Tuesday, May 28th (8 pm) to Wednesday, May 29th (5 am).

Diversion: motorists will be diverted to the parallel B159 federal road in Salzach.
