Increased lorry check in Tyrol: 1 in 3 guilty of drivers’ hours’ rules offences

Every third driver checked during an increased HGV inspection last Tuesday in Tyrol broke drivers’ hours’ regulations, reports the Austrian police.

In total, 276 vehicles were checked by the authorities.

Officers focused on compliance with EU regulations (including drivers’ hours’ regulations and alcohol limits), the loading of HGVs (especially load securing), roadworthiness and compliance with the regulations of the transported goods (e.g. dangerous goods).

According to the police report, a wide variety of violations were found in around 83 vehicles:

  • 18 vehicle drivers were temporarily prohibited from continuing their journey
  • 2 license plates were removed
  • 85 drivers’ hours’ offences
  • 21 fines for overweight
  • 6 fines for missing or insufficient load securing
  • 51 cases of technical defects (tyres, wheel bearings, poor braking effect, lighting defects, etc.)
  • 4 violations regarding dangerous goods regulations
  • 20 other violations (commercial regulations, equipment, seat belt requirements, etc.)

In addition to the violations listed above, according to the police, 30 reports and 71 penalty orders for other traffic violations were reported. Security deposits were also collected from 62 foreign road users.

None of the drivers were found guilty of any drink-driving offences.
