A haulier and its driver could be about to pay an enormous fine after police officers in Denmark found the lorry driver had driven for 19 hours in a 24 hour period.

Just before Christmas, road police pulled over a truck at the exit from the motorway in Greve, south of Copenhagen.

The officers then found that the trucker had driven for 19 hours in just one day, and was also guilty of other violations. As a consequence, the driver and its haulier now face a fine of more than 200,000 Danish Crowns (roughly 26,885 euros).

The truck itself is being withheld as security until the fine is paid. The police will also demand that the driver be stripped of the right to drive in Denmark for six months.

According to fagbladet3f.dk, the 52-year-old Bulgarian driver immediately had trouble cooperating with officers once he was pulled over. A review of the tachograph showed serious violations – the vehicle had been driven 11 times in the last 28 days without the tachograph being turned on.
