The new solution combines advanced dashcam capabilities with mobile device blocking technology to enhance driver safety and fleet performance.
The system blocks access to messaging apps, social media, streaming, and internet browsing while the vehicle is in motion. Unlike traditional solutions, it requires no extra hardware, as the Blackout Technologies app connects directly to the dashcam via the driver’s smartphone.
Sam Footer, SureCam’s partnership director, highlighted the growing concern over smartphone distractions, stating,
“Distraction from smartphone use is responsible for a large proportion of road collisions, so fleets are seeking ways to enhance concentration and encourage responsible driving habits.”
The app activates automatically when the vehicle moves, disabling notifications and locking popular apps. It also incorporates a two-minute delay to prevent phone use during brief stops. In case of a suspected collision, the system sends a push notification to the driver and alerts fleet managers for a swift response.
Blackout Technologies CEO Mark Hadley emphasized the broader benefits, saying,“By removing temptation and fostering improved concentration, our tool can prevent many avoidable injuries and deaths while enhancing driver and fleet performance.”
The collaboration marks an industry-first solution that combines advanced dashcam capabilities with device-blocking technology. It aims to improve road safety, driver welfare, and fleet risk management, while potentially reducing insurance costs.
