The fine alert is a free, email-based notification system offered as part of Hungary’s e-toll programme. It notifies registered users when suspected unauthorized road use is detected by the toll operator’s control system. The service is particularly useful for addressing errors like depleted balances or incorrect toll declarations, such as misclassified vehicle axle numbers or emission categories.

How does it work?

According to the National Toll Payment Service Ltd. (NÚSZ), the updated fine alert system will work as follows:

  • Each day, the system reviews potential unauthorized road use that may have occurred in the previous 24 hours.
  • If such instances are detected, an email notification is sent to the registered toll payer’s account on the same day.
  • Users can manage the service by logging into their HU-GO account on the hu-go.hu website, navigating to the Current Accounts section, and enabling or disabling the fine alert feature.

Key details for hauliers

  1. Email configuration
Hauliers should verify that their notification email address is correctly configured in their HU-GO account. Each account must have an email address linked to it for receiving alerts.
  2. Common errors to avoid
Misclassification of vehicles remains one of the primary causes of fines, the operator warns. For instance, many users mistakenly select the “J4” category (reserved for four-axle vehicles) for five-axle trucks, which should fall under the “J5” category. NÚSZ advises hauliers to double-check such settings.
  3. Service limitations
NÚSZ emphasises that the fine alert is a voluntary convenience service, and its availability is not guaranteed. The notifications are for informational purposes only, and no legal rights can be claimed based on them.
  4. Holiday notifications
Fine alerts for certain holiday periods will be sent in bulk. For example:

    • Alerts for December 24–26 will be issued on December 27.
    • Alerts for December 31 and January 1 will be sent on January 2.
  5. Updates on disruptions
Technical issues or outages affecting the fine alert system will be communicated on the nemzetiutdij.hu website under the “Maintenance” tab.

NÚSZ recommends all hauliers activate the fine alert service to prevent fines from accumulating unnecessarily. Additionally, they suggest keeping a close eye on vehicle settings in the toll declaration system and maintaining sufficient account balances.

The first penalty alerts will be issued today, 10 December, covering incidents that occurred on 9 December. Hauliers are urged to use the service and check their account settings immediately.
