Lorry checks conducted on Tuesday on the A30 near Bissendorf saw police officers “with their hands full” in the process of checking a  “disgusting” refrigerated trailer with a defective cooling system. The 1.2 tons of Shashlik onboard was deemed unfit for consumption and had to be discarded.

As described by the police, a veterinary inspector checked the temperature of the trailer on site and ordered the return and destruction of the goods due to a defect in the cooling system. In addition, the trailer had significant defects in its braking system and tyres that required immediate replacement.

In another case, a semi-trailer that was loaded with 22 tons of aluminum was subject to an inspection. On this occasion, the load was completely inadequately secured, while one of the tyres sported a large, deep hole. The load had to be resealed by the driver with an 20 additional belts each and the tyres were changed on site. It was only then that the vehicle was allowed back onto the road.

Marco Ellermann, spokesman for the Osnabrück Police Department, said the two aforementioned incidents show “once again that controls are urgently needed”.

In total, officers inspected 61 commercial vehicles during Tuesday’s checks. In 8 cases, vehicles were prohibited from continuing their journey. The police withheld around €700 in security payments and initiated asset recovery proceedings totalling €2,500.

The violations included 13 technical defects, 8 of which were overloads. Moreover, the police found that the load securing of another 11 trucks was inadequate. Violations of the driving and rest times as well as other traffic violations were also an issue during the inspection.
