Summer holiday truck bans in Europe

Summer traffic bans apply in a number of European countries. Below is a summary of the bans that apply in Poland, Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Slovakia, Hungary and Italy.

Poland

Vehicles and truck combinations with a maximum permissible weight of over 12 tonnes are subject to holiday traffic bans in Poland. They are valid:

  • on Fridays from 18 to 22,
  • on Saturdays from 8 to 14,
  • on Sundays from 8 to 22.

The truck traffic ban for trucks lasts from the end of the Polish school year, i.e. this year from June 24 until August 28.

Austria – Tyrol

From July 9, 2022 to September 11, 2022, traffic bans will apply on several local and national roads in Tyrol at weekends.

These are the roads in the Innsbruck, Kufstein and Reutte districts. The bans also will prevent drivers from avoiding traffic jams with alternative local routes. The measure taken by the Tyrolean government is to apply from 7 on Saturdays until 19 on Sundays and apply to all motor vehicles. Only destination transport or transport starting in prohibited districts is exempted from the restriction.

The Czech Republic

In the Czech Republic, summer traffic bans apply to trucks and vehicle combinations with a DMC above 7.5 tonnes and is in force from July 1 to August 31. They include highways, expressways and first-class roads.

The bans apply as follows:

  • Fridays from 17 to 21,
  • Saturdays from 7 to 13,
  • Sundays and other holidays in the summer from 13 to 22.

France

Truck traffic bans in France apply to lorries and vehicle combinations with a DMC above 7.5 tonnes (except for special vehicles and agricultural vehicles).

This year’s summer restrictions will apply from 7 am to 7 pm on the following Saturdays:

  • July 16th, 23rd and 30th
  • August 6th, 13th and 20th

Germany

From July 1 to August 31 on Saturdays between 7 and 20, trucks will not be allowed to travel on some federal highways and roads in Germany. The local restrictions include trucks with a maximum permissible weight of more than 7.5 tonnes, and trucks with trailers intended for commercial transport of goods.

Slovakia

From July 1 to August 31, traffic restrictions for vehicles with a GVW over 7.5 tonnes are in force on Saturdays from 7 to 19.

The truck ban is relaxed on the national holiday of 5 July. The exception applies to all trucks on the motorways, 1st class roads and roads for international traffic coming to the territory of the Slovak Republic from the neighbouring states and whose destination (e.g. loading or unloading place) is on the territory of the Slovak Republic.

Hungary

Summer traffic restrictions are in force from July 1 to August 31 and apply to vehicles with a DMC above 7.5 tonnes.

The bans are valid on the following days:

  • from 15 on Saturday (if it is not a working day) to 22 on Sundays,
  • from 10 pm on the eve of a public holiday until 22 on the day of the holiday.

Hungarian traffic bans apply to the following routes:

  • the M7 motorway,
  • national road No. 2, Budapest-Parassapuszta,
  • the 2A main road,
  • national road No. 6, Dunaujvaros-Budapest,
  • national road No. 7,
  • national road No. 10, Dorog-Budapest,
  • national road No. 11, Esztergom-Budapest,
  • national road No. 12,
  • national road No. 1201,
  • national road No. 51 from the intersection with the national road No. 510 to Dömsöd, – national road No. 71,
  • national road No. 76 between the intersection of the national road 71 with the road No. 7 and between Zalaapati and the national road No. 71,
  • national road No. 55, Alsonyek-Baja,
  • national road 82 – from the national road No. 8 to Veszpremvarsany,
  • national road No. 84 from Sümeg to national road No. 71,
  • national road No.33, Dormand-Debrecen,
  • national road No. 86, Janossomorja-Nemesböd and Körmend-Zalabaksa,
  • national road No. 37, Miskolc-Satoraljaujhely from the intersection of the national road No. 38 to the intersection with the national road No. 37 to Rakamaz.

Italy

In summer in Italy, in addition to Sunday and holiday traffic bans, there are also Saturday and Friday restrictions.

The traffic of trucks with a DMC above 7.5 tonnes on Italian roads will be prohibited as follows:

  • July 2 (Saturday) from 8 to 16,
  • July 3 (Sunday) from 7 to 22,
  • July 9 (Saturday) from 8 to 16,
  • July 10 (Sunday) from 7 to 22,
  • July 16 (Saturday) from 8 to 16,
  • July 17 (Sunday) from 7 to 22,
  • July 22 (Friday) from 16 to 22,
  • July 23 (Saturday) from 8 to 16,
  • July 24 (Sunday) from 7 to 22,
  • July 29 (Friday) from 16 to 22,
  • July 30 (Saturday) from 8 to 16,
  • July 31 (Sunday) from 7 to 22,
  • August 5 (Friday) from 16 to 22,
  • August 6 (Saturday) from 8 to 22,
  • August 7 (Sunday) from 7 to 22,
  • August 12 (Friday) from 16 to 22,
  • August 13 (Saturday) from 8 am to 10 pm,
  • August 14 (Sunday) from 7 to 22,
  • August 15 (Monday, public holiday) from 7 to 22,
  • August 20 (Saturday) from 8 to 16,
  • August 21 (Sunday) from 7 to 22,
  • August 27 (Saturday) from 8 to 16,
  • August 28 (Sunday) from 7 to 22.
