A20 closed in Kent due to Roundhill Tunnel technology fault

The A20 is closed in both directions between the M20 and the A260 near Folkestone due to emergency roadworks which are being carried out within Roundhill Tunnel.

A technology fault occurred at the tunnel last night, and at the time of writing, both carriageways between the Junction 13 of the M20 and the A260 for Hawkinge remain closed.

National Highways says its contractors are in attendance and carrying out the required repair works.

Roundhill Tunnel is expected to remain closed into the morning rush hour period.

National Highways’ Diversion Details 

Eastbound traffic is being diverted via the hollow circle diversion symbol:

  • Exit M20 at J13 and onto the A259 Churchill Avenue.
  • Travel east to the A260 Canterbury Road roundabout.
  • Take the first exit on to the A260 Canterbury Road and head north.
  • At the Spitfire Way roundabout take the third exit on to the A20 coastbound.

Westbound traffic is being diverted via the hollow square diversion symbol:

  • Follow the above diversion route in reverse.

UPDATE:

Drivers in Kent are advised that the A20 has been reopened following an earlier technical fault in the Roundhill Tunnel.

The fault was detected at 10.30pm on Sunday 3 September 2023 and the A20 between Junction 13 of the M20 and the A260 for Hawkinge was closed.

A specialist engineer was sent to carry out an assessment and was able to make a repair.

The repair was carried out by 6.48am and the tunnel was reopened shortly afterwards.
