Austria’s renewed temporary controls at road border crossings with Slovenia and Hungary were initially set to expire on 12 November, but have now been extended until 11 May 2025.
The Austrian Interior Ministry explains the decision as a response to the persistently high levels of illegal migration and increased smuggling activity along Austria’s southern borders, as well as the strain on the asylum reception system. Other cited reasons include the security risks arising from geopolitical developments in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as the threat of terrorism across the European Union.
Similarly, Germany has extended its border controls with Austria from 12 November until 11 May next year. German authorities cite the risks associated with illegal migration, which they say exacerbate the existing pressures on public order and security amid an already strained refugee reception situation. The decision also considers potential increases in migration pressures at the EU’s external borders, stemming from recent events in Afghanistan, Turkey, and Syria.
