The closure is necessary to facilitate work on a new road layout on the A102, a crucial part of the ongoing Silvertown Tunnel Project.

The closure will take place:

  • Saturday, 7 September to Monday, 9 September
  • Closure duration: From 00:01 Saturday morning (just after midnight on Friday) until 05:00 Monday morning.

During these closures, the Blackwall Tunnel will remain open to northbound traffic, though there may be occasional diversions on the approach. In some instances, northbound vehicles may be directed through the southbound tunnel.

Routine maintenance closures of the tunnel, which occur from 23:59 on Saturdays until 07:00 on Sunday mornings, will continue as planned.

The Blackwall Tunnel is one of Europe’s busiest road tunnels, with more than 100,000 vehicles passing through daily. The new Silvertown Tunnel, scheduled to open in spring 2025, is being constructed to alleviate congestion by providing an additional route across the Thames.

Upon completion, lorries using both the Blackwall and Silvertown Tunnels will be required to pay up to £10 during peak times.
