Bratislava restricts heavy goods traffic to ease congestion

The Ministry of Transport of the Slovak Republic, in cooperation with the road administrator NDS, has begun efforts to relieve Bratislava of transit traffic heading towards Žilina. For carriers, this means significant changes, as a new restriction on heavy goods traffic has been introduced.

In early March, NDS installed dozens of road signs informing drivers about the redirection of transit traffic from the D2 motorway (Pečňa – Petržalka) to the D4 and then to the D1/D4 junction. This measure aims to ease congestion on the heavily overloaded Prístavný Bridge (Port Bridge), according to the Slovak Ministry of Transport.

Under the newly introduced traffic regulations, only commercial vehicles weighing over 3.5 tonnes that are delivering goods to the residential area are permitted to use the Prístavný Bridge. All other transit traffic is redirected from the D2 motorway (Pečňa – Petržalka) to the D4 and then from the D4 to the D1 motorway via the newly opened branch at the D1/D4 intersection.

“The diversion of transit traffic from the Prístavný Bridge will remain a permanent solution from now on,” said Filip Macháček, CEO of the National Motorway Company (NDS).

Drivers who violate the bridge entry restriction may face a fine of up to €1,000 in summary proceedings and up to €1,500 in administrative proceedings, according to the Austrian transport association AISÖ.
