“Disproportionate and unhelpful” – this is how the European Commission evaluates block checks in Tyrol in a letter to the regional authorities. Meanwhile, according to the calendar, the next two control actions are to take place in the coming week.

According to the calendar, the next block check will take place this Thursday, April 26, and Monday, April 30.

Meanwhile, EU transport commissioner Violeta Bulc called on Tyrol to reduce the number of controls scheduled until November this year.

We believe that the announced 25 block check procedures from March to November 2018 go beyond what is necessary to maintain and secure transport and supplies in Tyrol. Especially, since this measure often causes traffic jams in Bavaria, which puts pressure on the local environment” – Commissioner Bulc explained.

In addition, only 9 of the 25 dates indicated are preceded by a holiday and traffic ban for heavy goods vehicles.

As emphasized by Bulc, the systematic use of block checks infringes the free movement of goods, and thus one of the fundamental principles of the functioning of the Union.

Will the Austrians listen to the admonitions coming from Brussels and stop the checks in the coming months? We will keep you updated.
