As reported by road transport website trasportoeuropa.it, 175,936 commercial vehicles were inspected by the police between the start of January and the end of September 2022. Of those, 141,136 (80.2%) were registered in Italy, with 31,690 (18%) coming from other EU nations, and 3,110 (1.8%) from non-EU countries.
In total, 82,617 violations were recorded, which on average means that over 1 in every 3 commercial vehicles inspected was guilty of a violation.
The most common violation was overloading (28,407 offences), followed by breaches of drivers’ hours rules (26,906 offences) and speeding (20,541 offences).
Only 50 cabotage infringements were found across the whole 9 months.
Finally, the road traffic police also recorded 506 violations of the rules on international road haulage. 378 of these were made by vehicles from other EU countries, with hauliers registered in non-EU nations making 91 violations.
