In a recent Facebook post, ČESMAD BOHEMIA, the Czech road transportation organization, shared essential information regarding the implementation of second-generation tachograph cards, also known as GEN2/V2 cards. These cards are crucial for the proper operation of new tachograph systems, especially in the accurate recording of data such as border crossings.

The Czech association notes that V2 cards started being issued on July 17, 2023, with a distinguishing feature being the presence of the number '004′ below the e8 mark, specific to Czech cards (other countries may have varying markings).

According to ČESMAD BOHEMIA, discussions are ongoing with the European Commission to determine appropriate procedures for drivers using the new tachographs with older cards at border crossings.

Additionally, talks are underway with the government to explore the possibility of replacing old cards with V2 cards earlier than the standard five-year cycle.

Introduction to 2nd gen tachographs

As of August 21, 2023, the installation of second-generation intelligent tachographs became mandatory in new trucks. These advanced devices serve the crucial purpose of enforcing provisions outlined in the Mobility Package, including meticulous recording of border crossings, loading and unloading times, and other key data.

Inelo, a prominent supplier of solutions for the transport industry, assures Trans.iNFO that all existing driver cards will seamlessly integrate with the new tachographs, and vice versa.

This cross-compatibility ensures that there will be no obligation to replace existing driver cards, providing a cost-effective solution for the transition to the new system.

Enhanced card capabilities

2nd gen tachograph cards feature several enhanced features, including extended memory for data storage and additional sections for documenting loading and unloading activities, as well as automatic records of border crossings.

By the end of 2024, the storage period for driver activity data will double, expanding from 28 to 56 days, aligning with the demands of the smart tacho 2.

These advancements are essential to accommodate the increased data requirements of the new tachograph systems.

Compliance with EU regulations

The development of the new driver cards aligns with EU regulations, as outlined in Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021/1228 of 16 July 2021. These cards enable the storage of an extensive range of information, including the last 12 events of each type, 24 most recent faults of each type, and additional data regarding daily work periods and vehicle position data, which enhance monitoring and compliance capabilities.

Border crossing and loading/unloading data

The new tachograph cards improve the tracking of border crossings. They store critical information such as

  • the departure and arrival countries,
  • date and time of the border crossing,
  • vehicle position after crossing,
  • GNSS accuracy
  • authentication status,
  • and odometer reading.

Moreover, these cards also record vital loading and unloading details:

  • including the type of operation,
  • date and time of the operation,
  • vehicle position,
  • GNSS accuracy,
  • position date and time,
  • authentication status,
  • and odometer reading.
