According to the calendar, the summer has just begun. The temperatures are still growing. The summer period is not only the time of hot weather, but also the holiday season in which traffic is the biggest during the year and traffic jams occur more frequently. German ADAC TruckService gives some advice to truck drivers how to prevent accidents and damage to the tyres in these difficult conditions.

First: take care of your well-being

As ADAC experts say, the most important thing is to focus on what is happening on the road. It is obvious, but it should be noted that high temperatures and more traffic constitute additional burden for the driver. Distraction and fatigue are among the main causes of accidents.

Therefore, according to the experts of German automobile club, you should ensure that you get enough sleep, and when you see first symptoms of fatigue while driving, you should stop for even a short break.

During your trip it is recommended to eat a snack rich in carbohydrates which, unlike fats, have a positive impact on concentration. For example, you can eat a fruit. Remember to drink the right amount of liquids, preferably water. 3 litres per day should be enough to prevent circulation problems. However, avoid chilled drinks – they only result in increased sweating.

Another essential matter when it comes to driving safety is the driver’s environment. ADAC TruckService emphasises that the driver’s cabin cannot be too cold. Before you enter the road you need to let fresh air to the driver’s cabin. The difference between the temperature set in the air conditioning and the external temperature should not exceed 6 degrees.

ADAC also recommends using cooling body sprays, previously cooled t-shirts and hats.

Second: check the tyres

During the hot season the drivers should care not only for themselves but also for the tyres. When the air temperature is 30 degrees Celsius, the temperature of asphalt can reach up to 60 degrees. In such conditions the tyres wear faster and pose a potential threat of accident.

Therefore, before starting the trip, check tyre pressure and inspect them for possible damage, bulges, cracks, blisters.

If a tyre bursts while driving, keep calm and start braking gradually as soon as you can. Do not stop rapidly.

If a tyre catches fire, the driver should continue to drive until the fire goes out. Stopping the truck may result in spreading fire over the entire vehicle.
