DHL Freight has added two duo trailers to its fleet for groupage transport between its terminals in Madrid and Barcelona. Each duo trailer combines two semi-trailers and has a total length of 31.75 metres, making it the highest-capacity road transport solution currently available in Europe.

The modular design of the DUO trailers aims to optimise transport flows and significantly reduce environmental impact. According to DHL, the use of HVO fuel enables an emissions reduction of up to 90%.

Due to their size and weight, DUO trailers are subject to specific regulations, requiring special permits and limiting their operation to designated routes within national borders. The semi-trailers can also function independently, as they are equipped with specific coupling and operational features.

The configuration includes a reinforced chassis on the front trailer to handle braking and towing forces. The current operation involves transporting freight from Madrid to Barcelona, with part of the cargo destined for Freiburg, Germany. The rear trailer operates independently on the second leg of the journey.
