The incident occurred in the area of the village of Blubberhouses on Tuesday.

As explained by officers, the driver of the lorry, 51-year-old Jacek Borowski, lost control of his HGV heading down the hill and blocked the road completely.

The road was closed for most of the day, which North Yorkshire Police says caused significant disruption in the area. No other persons were involved or injured as a result of the accident.

Officers breathalysed the driver, who blew 92 micrograms of alcohol in 100 milligrams of breath, which is almost three times the legal limit.

The trucker was remanded into custody immediately and put before York Magistrates Court on Wednesday. He pleaded guilty to driving over the prescribed limit and was disqualified from driving for 23 months.

In its Facebook post detailing the incident, North Yorkshire Police stressed that officers will not tolerate drunk drivers on the roads. The police added that this was a quick result for an incident which could have been much worse.
