According to a report by the Thuringian Police, the accident occurred at around 10.45pm on December 16th and involved a 45-year-old truck driver.
The trucker left a freight depot in Erfurt his lorry, but did not hook up the trailer correctly. As a result, when cornering, the loose trailer became wedged on the corner the tractor unit.
The driver then made matters worse by attempting to use the power of the truck’s engine to push the tractor unit back under the trailer.
As a result, both the truck and the trailer were “massively damaged”, with the repair cost estimated to be €20,000.
It also turned out that the lorry driver had been under the influence of alcohol. He was found to be over two times over the legal drink-drive limit for motorists in the country.
The 45-year-old was fined an undisclosed amount and will face further charges for endangering road users.
