To be or not to be for European carriers: how to win the battle for drivers in a time of crisis?

A deepening driver shortage, unfavourable demographics and rising wage demands against a backdrop of high operating costs are among the challenges facing Europe’s road freight sector in 2026. How can transport companies maintain operational continuity? The issue will be discussed during a free live expert debate on 25 June.

The European road transport market is undergoing a structural shift. Beyond volatile fuel prices, toll changes and pressure on margins, the shortage of professional drivers has become one of the main constraints on fleet capacity across the continent.

Data from the recently published report on professional drivers’ earnings, featuring indicators such as the Driver Satisfaction Index (DSI), points to growing tension in the market. Drivers are calling for better pay, more flexible schedules and greater respect at loading docks, while carriers continue to operate under tight financial pressure.

To address these challenges, the European Road Transport Institute is organising an international live-streamed debate. The session will bring together transport operators and industry representatives to discuss practical responses to the driver shortage and the pressures facing European carriers.

Key topics on the agenda

  • The Driver Satisfaction Index reality check
The latest findings on driver earnings, motivation and willingness to recommend the profession.
  • Infrastructure failures and the loading dock problem
Excessive waiting times, poor parking infrastructure and what employers can realistically improve.
  • The employee’s market vs operational inflation
Where the line of financial compromise lies between rising social demands and carrier survival.
  • The generational gap and third-country recruitment
International recruitment from regions such as Asia and South America, and the administrative barriers linked to visas and Code 95 requirements.

The debate will be moderated by Michał Pakulniewicz, Transportation Market Analyst at the European Road Transport Institute.
