The 41-year-old Ukrainian national was pulled over by officers in the Polish city of Wrocław last week while driving his Ford Mondeo.

He was over the drink-driving limit and his car was found to be unroadworthy. In addition, the driver presented a driving licence that officers suspected was fake.

According to the official police report, this turned out to be the case after a closer examination of the card with UV light found that the card was missing the required security features.

The print was also of poor quality and the licence was suspiciously valid for every single category, even for trams.

The driver later admitted that he had purchased the fake driving license in Ukraine due to his actual driving licence being confiscated by the police for a prior infringement.

The news comes after a number of European nations have decided to make Ukrainian driving licences valid. Therefore, it is feasible that someone who obtains such a document could try to use it to gain employment as a commercial driver in the EU despite being banned from driving or not having completed training.

In their statement regarding the discovery, Wrocław police warned that being in possession of a forged document such as this could result in a fine and in the worst-case scenario, a prison sentence of up to 5 years.

The driver with the fake licence was arrested on the spot and his fate will be known later.
