Hungarian authorities have confirmed the presence of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) on a cattle farm in Kisbajcs, near the Slovakian border, where approximately 1,400 cattle are kept. The outbreak was officially confirmed on 6 March 2025 after symptoms emerged on 3 March.

To control the spread of the highly contagious disease, the Hungarian National Food Chain Safety Office (NÉBIH) immediately introduced strict nationwide restrictions on livestock transportation. A 3-kilometre protection zone and a 10-kilometre surveillance zone have been established around the affected farm. These measures are currently in effect and will remain until further notice, as authorities continue to monitor and manage the situation to prevent further spread of the disease.

All susceptible animal species, including cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, and buffalo, are subject to transport restrictions across Hungary. Exporting susceptible livestock to other EU countries and third countries is prohibited nationwide until further notice.

In response, Poland introduced vehicle disinfection installations at key road border crossings with Slovakia to prevent the disease from entering its territory. As of 8 March 2025, Poland has banned the import of animals, products, and items potentially transmitting FMD from Hungary and specific regions of Slovakia.

Russia and the United Kingdom have also imposed import bans or restrictions on Hungarian livestock and related animal products.

Germany experienced an FMD outbreak earlier in 2025, resulting in regional restrictions and international trade implications. Currently, the German situation remains under control with no new cases reported since February.

The Hungarian Road Transport Association (MKFE) advises transport companies and drivers to closely monitor official updates and adhere strictly to biosecurity guidelines.

Continuous updates on trade restrictions and detailed guidelines are available on the official NÉBIH website.
