Police warn motorists over fuel theft and bootleg sales of petrol & diesel

A PC from Cheshire Police's Rural Crime Team has encouraged motorists and businesses to ensure their bulk fuel storage is secure, and advised people to avoid the temptation to buy stolen or bootleg fuel so as not to damage their vehicle.

Writing on Facebook, PC Jim Clark said that the rise in domestic vehicle and household fuel costs, as well as the imminent ban on red diesel, would likely see a rise in offences related to fuel theft, fraud and criminal damage.

In Clark’s opinion, “now is as good a time as any to review your bulk fuel storage and machinery security measures”. He also listed wireless CCTV, strong padlocks, chains and large canine companions as being good options.

Another issue raised by the PC was the possibility of more stolen or bootleg fuel entering the market.:

That offer of “Cheap fuel” from a “geezer who knows a geezer who knows a geezer” is almost always not going to be the deal of century when it all goes wrong. Mechanical issues, moody fuel or getting your collar felt by the Police or HMRC Road Fuel Testing Unit officers is going to cost you probably more than the few quid you think you may be saving!

The police officer then went on to add that a man had been arrested earlier this week for theft of fuel from a rural location. His car had been seized, a substantial sum of money retained, and at a rough estimate approximately 375 litres of fuel recovered. He was interviewed, charged and will face court.
