Motorists in the region of Garmisch-Partenkirchen will face significant travel disruptions as Federal Route 23 near Grainau is set to close for two weeks, starting on Monday, 16 September. The closure is due to construction work related to the relocation of the highway to a newly constructed roundabout south of the Kramer Tunnel, according to an announcement from the Weilheim State Construction Office.
Drivers intending to travel through Garmisch-Partenkirchen towards the Austrian border will need to prepare for lengthy detours. A large-scale diversion has been planned, with signposted routes leading via Füssen, Steingaden, and Oberammergau in the Allgäu region.
The closure is expected to remain in place until 29 September, though delays may occur if weather conditions affect the construction schedule.
The Kramer Tunnel project aims to reduce the volume of through traffic in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where up to 16,000 vehicles pass through the town daily on federal route 23, according to the construction authority.
Similarly, federal route 2 to the east also experiences heavy traffic, with plans underway for the construction of the Wank Tunnel to serve as a bypass.
