The Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) has summarised the first month of this year on German roads. In January, total heavy goods traffic involving vehicles over 3.5 tonnes on toll road infrastructure increased by 3.1 per cent year-on-year.

However, it should be noted that in January last year, the statistics did not yet include vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) above 3.5 tonnes and up to 7.5 tonnes, which have been subject to the German toll since 1 July 2024.

The total mileage of all trucks in Germany amounted to approximately 3.27 billion kilometres, of which 1.87 billion kilometres were covered by German trucks, recording an increase of 5.7 per cent (similar to December 2024, when their mileage increased by 5.6 per cent year-on-year).

Polish trucks, with a mileage of around 0.62 billion kilometres, recorded a result 0.2 per cent lower than a year ago. The third country with the highest truck mileage after Germany is Lithuania, which, contrary to several years of growth, recorded a decline for the second month in a row – by 0.6 per cent. Vehicles from Lithuania covered around 121.5 million kilometres on German roads in January.

Traffic of trucks with a GVW from 7.5 tonnes

If we consider only the traffic of vehicles over 7.5 tonnes, the mileage of trucks on German toll roads in January amounted to 3.17 billion kilometres, 0.1 per cent more than a year ago.

German trucks in this category recorded a modest increase of 1.2 per cent, while Polish trucks reduced their mileage by 1.9 per cent, and Lithuanian trucks covered 1.1 per cent fewer kilometres.

The share of Polish trucks over 7.5 tonnes on German roads in January was around 19.15 per cent, which is above the average for the whole of 2024 (18.93 per cent). The mileage of Lithuanian trucks in January accounted for 3.81 per cent of the total mileage (for comparison, the 2024 average was 3.68 per cent). German trucks over 7.5 tonnes completed 56.5 per cent of journeys on toll roads in Germany.
