Border controls at Germany’s borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland, which were due to expire on 15 March this year, will continue until 15 June this year, announced the Federal Ministry of the Interior.
Although the number of attempted illegal border crossings has fallen significantly since the controls were introduced, the extension is intended to further combat smuggling and reduce illegal migration.
According to the ministry, almost 23,000 unauthorised border crossings have been detected and around 13,000 illegal attempts to cross the German border have been prevented since the controls were introduced on 16 October.
Germany also controls the border with Austria. This measure is due to expire on 11 May this year.
