A haulier spotted using a mobile while driving one of his trucks has paid a hefty price for attracting the attention of the police, as a roadside check ultimately led to a fine of over €21,000.

As confirmed by the Danish road police, the haulier/truck driver was stopped by a patrol from Tungvognscenter Syd on the Silkeborg motorway near Låsby last Thursday. Officers decided to pull the truck over after spotting its driver using his mobile phone while driving.

A technical examination of the truck then showed that its tachograph had been tampered with. The manipulation meant the tachograph was registering rest even though the truck was being driven.

On that basis, the driver and road transport director was fined DKK 157,500 (approximately €21,180).

The Bulgarian haulage boss admitted to the charges, but did not have the means to pay the fine. His truck was thus confiscated by the police.

The case has now been referred to a local court, who must decide whether the driver shall be stripped of his driving licence or not.
