Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) reports a 0.9 per cent increase in container throughput at the HHLA container terminals, rising to 4.49 million standard containers (TEU) compared to the same period last year (previous year: 4.45 million TEU).
At the Hamburg container terminals, throughput was almost on par with the previous year, increasing by 0.2 per cent to 4.29 million TEU (previous year: 4.28 million TEU). While volumes in the Far East and Middle East trade lanes declined in overseas traffic, volumes for the North and South America trade lanes, particularly to the United States, increased significantly. This was announced by the port and logistics group on 14 November.
Additionally, cargo volumes with other European deep-sea ports developed positively against the backdrop of temporary route changes due to the military conflict in the Red Sea.
In addition to Swedish and Polish feeder traffic, container handling from Lithuania and within Germany, in particular, recorded a strong increase in feeder traffic volumes. In contrast, Finnish and Danish cargo volumes declined. The feeder share of waterside handling was 19.0 per cent (previous year: 18.4 per cent).
Container throughput also increases at international HHLA locations
According to Group information, the international container terminals HHLA TK Estonia and CT Odessa also recorded a strong increase in throughput volume, rising by 20.2 per cent to 203 thousand TEU (previous year: 169 thousand TEU). This was driven by strong volume growth at the multifunctional terminal HHLA TK Estonia and the resumption of waterside handling at the Container Terminal Odessa in the third quarter of 2024.
Eurogate: Wilhelmshaven drives throughput result
Container throughput also increased at the three German locations of port operator Eurogate. In particular, volumes increased in Wilhelmshaven in the first nine months. Throughput totalled just under 580,000 TEU, an increase of 40 per cent compared to the same period last year.
The Eurogate terminal in Hamburg saw an increase of 1.8 per cent compared to the same period last year, while almost 10 per cent more containers were handled in Bremerhaven.
