The lorry is being leased by REWE on pay-per-use basis from hylane, who claim to have the largest European hydrogen HGV fleet.
According to hylane, Northern Germany is particularly well suited for the use of hydrogen trucks. This is because there is more green hydrogen available and the transport routes for the environmentally friendly fuel are short.
Commenting on the use of the truck, Jochen Vogel , CEO of REWE Nord, said:
“Sustainability and climate protection play a major role at REWE. We have already set new standards with the REWE Green Buildings, which use up to 40 percent less energy. Now it is important to make our logistics fit for a sustainable future. We are now taking the first step in the region with this hydrogen truck.”
Sara Schiffer , Managing Director of hylane, added:
“REWE is making our food supply in Germany increasingly sustainable. We are proud to be able to use our hydrogen trucks to help ensure that the REWE markets in the north can now be supplied in a climate-friendly manner. Especially in the north of our country, we have the opportunity to use locally produced and climate-neutral hydrogen.”
