After 14 years of works, world’s longest tunnel under the Swiss Alps have been completed!
On 15th October at exactly 2.17pm with last 3 minutes of drilling works broadcast live on Swiss and German TV, champagnes were popped for celebration. The 57km Gottard rail tunnel is claimed to revolutionise transport across Europe, being opened by the end of 2016. Its length exceeds the 53.8km Japanese Seikan tunnel between the island of Honshu and Hokkaido and the 50km Channel Tunnel linking England and France.
