A Romanian lorry driver has been caught trying to avoid paying Hungarian road tolls by using a pedal contraption to tilt his vehicle’s licence plate.

Whenever the driver got near the road toll cameras, the tilted the plate would not be detected, in turn allowing the truck to use motorways for free. However, the plan ultimately hasn’t paid off as the authorities spotted the truck last month.

Employees of Hungary’s National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) checked the lorry, which was travelling from Romania to Italy, on road no 86 in early June.

During the routine inspection, the officers noticed that the number plate could be tilted mechanically with the pedal in the cab. Using the contraption, the driver was able to tilt the license plate near the camera so it could not be identified.

NAV employees have notified the police, that have initiated proceedings for misuse of a unique identification mark.

A pénzügyőrök a 86-os főúton egy Olaszországba tartó román teherautót ellenőriztek. A vizsgálaton észrevették, hogy a rendszámtábla a vezetőfülkében lévő pedállal mechanikusan billenthető, amivel az útdíj megfizetése kijátszható.

Munkatársaink értesítették a rendőrséget, akik egyedi azonosító jellel visszaélés bűntett elkövetése miatt eljárást indítottak.
