Lorry park owner dumbfounded by lack of business, refutes claims prices are too high

Despite Germany's chronic shortage of HGV parking spaces, a brand-new, 107-space lorry park on the A9 motorway is said to be attracting as little as 3 trucks per evening. The owner of the facility has told a local newspaper he simply can't explain why the lory park has so little custom, and has defended its pricing.

The XXLKW Secure Parking Elbebrücke GmbH lorry park is located in Vockerode, just off junction 9 of the A9 between Leipzig and Berlin.

The lorry park has a kitchen area for truckers with hot plates and microwaves, free Wi-Fi, a 24/7 shop & snack bar, showers & toilets, washing machines, CCTV, a lounge area, as well as charging facilities for electric trucks and refrigerated trailers.

Despite these amenities, and the shortage of parking in Germany, the lorry park remains empty on a regular basis. The owner has said that on an average night, only 3-8 trucks are parked there.

It has been suggested that the lorry park’s pricing is putting off drivers and hauliers.

The price list, as seen on the lorry’s parks website, is as follows:

Standard prices Soft opening prices
up to 10 hours normal rate 3.50 € / hour reduced rate €2.50 / hour, first hour free (*)
from 10 to 12 hours €35.00 €25.00
from 12 to 18 hours €40.00 €28.00
from the 18th to 24 hours €45.00 €32.00
from the 24th to 48 hours €65.00 €46.00
each additional day started €20.00 €14.00

The MDR article quoting the lorry’s park’s owner states that prices are still €25.00 for between 10 and 12 hours, so it appears that the soft opening rates still apply.

When asked if prohibitive pricing was putting off customers, owner Gerhardt Hauptstein told MDR that the prices are “absolutely justified for the service offered”.
