HGV driver ignores signage, ends up making 2-hour turn to avoid low bridge

A 51-year-old trucker from Uzbekistan driving a Lithuanian-registered truck ended up having to make a 2-hour U-turn on Wednesday. The driver, who was travelling through Switzerland on route to Italy, decided to ignore warning signs and stick by his GPS instead.

According to the Canton Police department, the driver was approaching the Albula Pass, but staunchly stuck by his GPS route, “consistently ignoring” all signage in the process.

Some of the signs included warnings about a maximum width 2.3 metres, a maximum height 3.3 metres, as well as an 18-ton weight limit.

At around 6.30pm, after driving past the aforementioned warning signs, the driver eventually realised he had no chance of going under the rail bridge in front of him without wrecking his trailer.

That left the driver with no other option than to turn his vehicle around, something that was far from straightforward given the limited space available.

Despite receiving instructions from two German motorists, it still took around two hours for the lorry to be turned around.

The trucker’s mistake also cost him a lot more than just his time – he was reported to the district prosecutor’s office for violating the restrictions on the road.
