The official construction start was marked on 5 September 2024, during a ceremony attended by key figures from politics and business, as well as employees, customers, and project partners. A time capsule was filled and sealed at the “LCCevo” construction site, symbolising this major milestone for the cargo airline.

Ashwin Bhat, CEO of Lufthansa Cargo, highlighted the project’s significance in addressing the evolving needs of global business and enhancing Lufthansa Cargo’s operational capabilities.

“In times of global tensions and changing customer demands, we need innovative solutions,” Bhat stated, emphasising the role of modern infrastructure in boosting efficiency and service quality for customers, while also creating sustainable and future-proof jobs for employees.

The initiative is expected to strengthen the role of Frankfurt Airport as a central cargo hub in Europe. Michael Niggemann, a member of the executive board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, reaffirmed Lufthansa’s commitment to the location, noting that the project would improve the cargo business’s efficiency and sustainability, while supporting airfreight operations essential to Europe’s economy.

The modernisation will include renewing all central cargo handling functions, such as storage and conveyor technology, building infrastructure, and IT systems, covering an area of approximately 330,000 square metres. The LCC, operational since 1982, has played a pivotal role in global airfreight traffic and continues to operate around the clock, seven days a week.

The construction is being conducted in phases to ensure uninterrupted operations at the hub. Stefan Dürr, the project manager, confirmed that the project is proceeding on schedule with the help of partners Züblin and Bleichert Automation. One of the key developments in the current phase is the construction of a 42-metre high-bay warehouse, set to become the second-highest building at Frankfurt Airport.
