Metrans, a subsidiary of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), has begun testing Slovakia’s first hydrogen-powered truck. This project is being undertaken in collaboration with Mobility & Innovation Production s.r.o (MIP). The announcement was made at the Slovakia Ring, where Metrans signed a letter of intent to incorporate the vehicle into its fleet, aiming for climate-neutral container transport.

The truck, built on the Ford F-Max platform with support from Ford, features a 117 kW REFIRE fuel cell and the Dana Sumo motor. It has a 48-kilogram hydrogen tank, providing a range of at least 600 kilometres. During the testing phase, the truck will be refuelled exclusively with hydrogen from renewable energy sources.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to test MIP’s new hydrogen-powered truck for our container transports. Through innovations like this, we can offer our customers climate-friendly transport not only by rail but also by road. This takes us another important step toward decarbonising European logistics chains,” said Peter Kiss, CEO of the Metrans Group.

Since 2022, Metrans has included e-trucks in its eco-friendly fleet, alongside energy-efficient electric and hybrid locomotives and electric container gantry cranes. The introduction of the hydrogen-powered truck complements these efforts, furthering Metrans’ commitment to providing climate-friendly transport solutions. Metrans is also part of the Clean Port & Logistics Cluster, exploring the use of hydrogen-powered equipment in port logistics.
