Milan’s mandatory blind spot rules for LGVs in force from 1 October

As of 1 October 2024, Milan will officially introduce its mandatory blind spot system requirements for light goods vehicles (LGVs) between 3.5 and 12 tonnes within the city’s Restricted Traffic Zone, also known as Zone B.

Zone B, demarcated by a red line and enforced between 07:30 and 19:30 from Monday to Friday, is designed to reduce traffic-related dangers in the city. The area is closely monitored by checkpoints marked with blue circles on maps, where vehicles are scrutinised for compliance with Milan’s new regulations.

The blind spot requirement originally came into effect for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) over 12 tonnes in October 2023, mandating the installation of advanced systems capable of detecting pedestrians and cyclists in areas of limited visibility.

However, its full enforcement was delayed from November 2023 to June 2024.

For HGVs over 12 tonnes, the grace period allowing entry into Zone B without a compliant blind spot assistant system extends until 31 December 2024, provided the vehicle owner has a valid contract for installing the necessary technology.

For LGVs between 3.5 and 12 tonnes, Milan’s blind spot regulations will now take effect on 1 October 2024. Vehicles falling into this category will have a grace period until 31 December 2025 if they provide evidence of a contract to install the required systems.

The regulations stipulate that all blind spot systems must be approved by the Comune di Milano and must comply with relevant legal standards. These systems should effectively detect obstacles and provide early warnings to drivers, helping to prevent accidents.

In addition, vehicles must display specific warning stickers to indicate the presence of blind spots, following guidelines set out by the city’s authorities.

For those vehicles that do not yet have the required systems in place but have arranged for future installation, there is an option to register online via the “Accedere ad Area B” platform. This registration allows owners to temporarily avoid penalties by uploading the necessary documentation.
