The Mont Blanc Tunnel is set to undergo a major renovation project from September to December 2024. This essential work will focus on the reconstruction of two 300-metre sections of the tunnel’s vault, marking the first deep renovation of the tunnel’s structure since its construction over 60 years ago.

The tunnel’s operator, TunnelMB, has confirmed that the refurbishment will require the tunnel to be completely closed for a period of 15 consecutive weeks.

The closure is scheduled to begin at 17:00 on Monday 2 September 2024 and will last until 17:00 on Monday 16 December 2024.

During this time, travellers are urged to use alternative routes to cross the Alps, as the tunnel, which connects Chamonix in France with Courmayeur in Italy, will be completely inaccessible.

In a related announcement, TunnelMB has addressed concerns from frequent users of the tunnel who hold subscription cards for 10 or 20 transits. Recognising the impact of the prolonged closure, the operator has decided to extend the validity of all subscription cards that are still active as of 2 September 2024.

The extension will add four months to the original expiry date of the cards, allowing users more time to take advantage of their pre-purchased transits. For example, a card set to expire on 30 September 2024, will now be valid until 31 January 2025, while one expiring on 30 April 2026, will be extended until 31 August 2026.

Subscribers will not need to take any action to benefit from this extension, as the changes will be applied automatically. Furthermore, if a subscription card is not fully utilised by the new expiry date, it can be recharged with additional transits, with both the remaining and new transits valid for up to 24 months from the date of the recharge.
