Moto plans new services on M26 that could ease Kent’s HGV parking issues

Moto, who run service stations throughout the UK, have announced a plan to build a new rest area on the M26 – a facility that would provide Kent with some badly needed capacity for HGV parking.

Last week, the motorway services company said its plan was to build the facility on the M26 in Kent at junction 2A.

Stuart Rose, Moto’s Acquisitions Manager, has urged local residents to take part in the consultation process before the project gets the green light:

“These proposals will provide a much needed rest stop for HGVs on what is a busy stretch of motorway and help to alleviate the issues experienced by local residents as a result of the current lack of facilities. In addition to providing an important piece of infrastructure to an area where the county council have already identified a need, the plans will bring new jobs and secure £18 million investment in the local economy. We are delighted to consult with residents in the surrounding area and look forward to hearing their thoughts on the plans.”

According to Kent Live, local residents will have the opportunity to have their say on the proposals until August 13th.

While a boost to the economy might be welcome in the area earmarked for the site, a number of residents in Kent have been somewhat hostile when it comes to HGV parking infrastructure being built in the county. This is very much reflected in comments from Kent County Council, who have been seeking solutions to the HGV parking problem outside the county.

Back in March, KCC’s director of growth, Barbara Cooper, said:

We are working closely with the DfT to work out what the plans are for traffic management going forward. Ideally we would like sites outside Kent because then congestion would be outside Kent.
