The official launch of a new charging station for electric trucks and buses took place yesterday, 27 August, at Munich’s Allianz Arena. The project will see the construction of 30 high-power and megawatt charging points and aims to support the growing demand for electric commercial vehicles.

The park is expected to meet the charging needs of up to 500 electric trucks and buses per day.

Located in the southern bus park of the Allianz Arena football stadium, the charging station will benefit from the stadium’s high-capacity power grid, which is normally under-utilised except on match days.

The project has been developed through a partnership between FC Bayern Munich and MAN Truck & Bus, taking advantage of the stadium’s proximity to the Munich North motorway junction: up to 10,000 trucks a day pass through this important European road freight hub.

“We will only meet the Paris climate targets if we rigorously decarbonise our vehicle fleets. By 2030, half of the trucks we produce each year should be electric. Charging infrastructure is the key. As a manufacturer, we are leading the way by working with E.ON to build a public charging network in Europe at our service locations. But that is not enough. That’s why we are very grateful for fresh ideas and joint projects like the one with FC Bayern,” says Alexander Vlaskamp, CEO of MAN Truck & Bus.

The charging park is part of a wider effort to meet the expected demand for a high-capacity charging infrastructure across Europe. According to the European manufacturers’ association ACEA, around 50,000 high-power and megawatt charging points will be needed by 2030. The Allianz Arena site is expected to be one of the key locations supporting this transition.
