Led by Dow and H.Essers, and supported by sector associations ECTA and Cefic, the Women in Logistics consortium brings together six other key players – Den Hartogh, Bertschi, Suttons Tankers, LyondellBasell, Eastman, and Covestro – in a collaborative effort to address the underrepresentation of women in logistics roles.

“Despite gradual improvements,” a recent WIL press release explains, “the gender imbalance in logistics remains significant. For instance, women constitute only 6% or less of the truck driver population in Europe. Addressing this gap, particularly during a driver shortage, is essential for creating a balanced and efficient workforce. Research has consistently shown that diverse teams drive stronger performance and better business outcomes. However, operational and leadership roles in logistics continue to be predominantly held by men, highlighting the need for targeted action to promote gender balance.”

The consortium adds that achieving gender equality in the workforce could have a significant impact on the global economy, potentially adding $28 trillion, or 26%, to annual global GDP by 2025.

Yet, according to the World Economic Forum, closing the global gender gap will take 131 years. While these figures provide a general overview, the challenge is even more pronounced in the logistics industry. These statistics prompted the founders to establish a unique initiative and join forces collaboratively.

The initiative highlights the significant gender gap in the sector, particularly in leadership positions and driving jobs. Research suggests that increased diversity within the workforce can lead to improved business outcomes, talent recruitment, and innovation.

The WIL consortium aims to be a platform for driving company action plans and fostering a more inclusive work environment. It will initially focus on the European chemical logistics industry, addressing sector-specific needs alongside diversity goals.

The consortium will work on raising awareness of the issue, securing leadership endorsement for diversity initiatives, sharing best practices amongst members, and advocating for policies that promote gender equality. Their efforts will target three key groups: drivers, operators, and leadership positions within the logistics sector.
