After ten years of development and integration of new technologies, Scania’s latest engine platform is now ready for implementation, the manufacturer announced on Tuesday.

The 13-litre engine range offers outputs from 368 kW to 450 kW, with up to 11% more power and 21 per cent more torque than the current generation. The 11-litre engines range from 202 to 368 kW.

“This is our most fuel-efficient engine ever, with increased torque, improved power and an impressive 50 per cent longer service life. It represents a breakthrough in engine technology,” says Joel Granath, Head of Power Solutions at Scania.

The platform incorporates several advances to optimise fuel consumption, including an improved throttle system, reduced internal friction and increased turbocharger efficiency.

Compared to the current generation, the 13-litre engine is up to seven per cent more fuel efficient, resulting in a remarkable saving of four litres of diesel per hour at full load.

Recognising the need to reduce the climate impact of combustion engines, Scania’s new platform not only delivers exceptional performance and reliability but also significantly reduces CO2 emissions.

“As an industry leader in trucks and buses, we are committed to a more sustainable future and are extending this commitment to industrial engines. In addition, this engine meets regulatory standards and is compatible with biodiesel blends and HVO,” Granath added.

The new engine platform has several notable features, including improved cooling, a more robust engine block and cylinder head, and a reinforced transmission.

Henrik Nilsson, Director of Product Management at Scania’s Power Solutions, emphasises the customer-centric approach adopted during development:

“Our main focus throughout the development phase has been to add value to our customers’ businesses while improving fuel economy and product performance.”
