New toll road to open in Rotterdam in December

The A24/Blankenburg connection, a new toll road designed to improve accessibility in the Rotterdam region, is set to open on 7 December 2024. The long-anticipated road will link the A15 at Rozenburg with the A20 at Vlaardingen, providing a crucial new route for traffic flow and economic stimulation in the area.

In a move to streamline travel, the A24/Blankenburg connection will feature a toll collection system free of traditional toll booths. Instead, drivers must register for automatic payments or manually pay online for each journey. This approach is designed to keep traffic moving smoothly, avoiding the delays commonly associated with toll booths.

Toll fees and vehicles affected

For the years 2024 and 2025, the toll fees are set as follows:

  • Cars, vans, and motorcycles (up to 3,500 kg): €1.51 per trip.
  • Electric vans (up to 4,250 kg): €1.51 per trip.
  • Lorries and other vehicles (over 3,500 kg): €9.13 per trip.
  • Electric vans weighing up to 4,250 kg, which are heavier due to battery weight, will now pay the same lower toll rate as other cars and vans (€1.51 per trip) rather than the higher lorry rate (€9.13 per trip).

All vehicles, including those with foreign license plates, will be subject to these tolls. From 2026, toll amounts will be adjusted annually for inflation on 1 January.
