No more paper MOT certificates for UK HGVs after 29 April

Hauliers operating HGVs and PSVs in the UK should be aware of important changes coming into effect on April 29, 2024, regarding how annual test certificates are issued by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).

To streamline the process and promote environmental responsibility, the DVSA will transition to a digital-first approach. Paper certificates will no longer be automatically issued for vehicles that pass their annual test. Instead, hauliers can access and download their pass certificates electronically through the MOT history service. This online platform offers a secure and convenient way to view a vehicle’s up-to-date test history anytime.

However, the DVSA understands that there may be situations where a paper copy is still preferred. Hauliers will have the option to request a paper certificate at the time of the test, although it will not be the default option. Paper certificates will still be automatically issued for vehicles that fail their annual test.

The shift towards digital certificates offers several advantages for hauliers. Firstly, it reduces reliance on paper, promoting a more environmentally friendly approach. Secondly, the online platform offers a secure and reliable way to access a vehicle’s complete test history, ensuring you always have the most up-to-date information. Finally, the MOT history service allows for 24/7 access to certificates, providing added flexibility and convenience.

To prepare for this change, hauliers are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the MOT history service and how to access their vehicle’s digital test records. Additionally, it’s wise to consider how your business can adapt to this new system and move towards relying on digital certificates.
