The daily driving limit has been increased to 10 hours and the weekly limit to 60 hours. This decision was taken by the Spanish Ministry of Transport in response to the traffic disruption caused by farmers’ protests across Spain.

Drivers stuck in traffic jams caused by farmers’ blockades will be exempt from the driving and rest time rules, provided that the extension of working hours does not endanger their safety.

The relaxation will apply in Spain from Monday 19 February to Monday 26 February.

According to a decision by the Ministry of Transport, the following derogations to the working time provisions of Regulation 561/2006 will apply in Spain next week:

  • increasing the maximum daily driving time from 9 hours to 10 hours,
  • an increase in the maximum weekly driving time from 56 to 60 hours,
  • possibility to reduce the daily rest period from 11 hours to 9 hours,
  • possibility of postponing the start of the weekly rest period after more than six 24-hour periods.
