The work of a young artist – a miniature, candy pond with a fish placed in a pothole was to be annihilated. The Mönchengladbach Road Office planned to fill the hole with asphalt in July. In the meantime, something unexpected happened.

After in mid-July, one of the drivers saved the most beautiful pothole in Germany from being repaired, the Roads Administration announced that it would take further action the following week. However, the hole wasn’t filled with asphalt after all. Last Friday the artist that created the fairy tale pond poured epoxy into it. This is the only solution that combined two goals – improving the safety of road users and preserving the work for posterity.

Fairytale pond

From a hole with a diameter of 20 centimeters, a miniature pond like a fairy tale was created by Maren Dörwaldt, a 33-year-old artist from Mönchengladbach.

The edges of the gap were painted, and its interior is decorated with shells, pebbles, small plants, goldfish and water shimmering in the sun with flecks of glitter. The work of the German woman has made a sensation in social media. The 33-year-old promised to embellish the next holes in the project under the name „Project Sommerloch” („Summer Hole Project”).
