A truck ended up ditching its cargo of asphalt into the Adriatic Sea on Monday due to “negligence” from the crew of the ferry that was transporting the vehicle from the Croatian mainland to the island of Hvar.
According to multiple reports in Croatia, the accident happened when the rope holding the truck snapped, causing the heavy trailer to fall into the sea with the truck’s cabin hanging precariously on the edge of the vessel.
The owner of the ferry told Croatian news website dalmatinskiportal.hr that the reason for the accident “was the crew’s negligence”. The owner also confirmed that nobody was injured during the accident and that a 200-ton crane had to be hired to take the trailer out of the water.
In a statement, the police said they would be investigating the accident:
„Today at around 11.20 am on the island of Hvar in the Old Town, a trailer with asphalt fell into the sea at the ferry port during the unloading of working machines from the truck. Investigative actions will be conducted with the assistance of police officers from the Hvar police station. According to the information available so far, no one was injured.”
