New secure truck parking facilities are being developed in Spain and Italy—Andamur has opened a 100-space site at San Román II, while the 2025-opening Vespucci Truck Village in Livorno will offer a fenced, 24/7 monitored rest area as part of an EU-funded project.

Efforts to improve road safety, driver welfare and cargo security are gaining momentum across Europe, with new secure truck parking facilities underway in both Spain and Italy. In Spain, Andamur has opened a new parking area at its San Román II site, while in Italy, the Vespucci Truck Village in Livorno is set to open in April 2025. Both projects aim to address the growing demand for safe and fully equipped rest areas for heavy goods vehicle drivers, in line with EU regulations and industry standards.

Andamur opens secure truck parking at San Román II in Spain

Spanish service area operator Andamur has launched a new secure parking facility at its San Román II site, offering 100 spaces for HGVs and meeting high safety standards.

The site, which forms part of the Andamur Security Parking network, includes 24/7 video surveillance with no blind spots, access control via ticket or number plate, pedestrian access with ticket scanning, perimeter fencing over two metres high with anti-climbing systems, and entry barriers equipped with skirts and number plate recognition.

To improve driver comfort, the facility offers showers, a restaurant, vending machines, a shop, hotel, laundry service, gym, picnic area and bicycle rental. It is located close to a refuelling zone where the fuel supply capacity has recently been tripled.

San Román II is currently undergoing certification to meet both the Safe and Secure Truck Parking Area (SSTPA) gold standard—aligned with EU Regulation 2022/1012—and the Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA) Parking Security Requirements (PSR). According to Andamur, this would make it one of the first sites in Europe to hold both certifications simultaneously.

The company also operates SSTPA gold-level parking areas at Guarromán and La Junquera, and offers access to more than 1,000 secure parking spaces across Europe through strategic partnerships.

New secure truck rest area to open in Livorno in April 2025

A new rest area for heavy goods vehicles and drivers—Vespucci Truck Village—is set to open in April 2025 in Guasticce, within the municipality of Collesalvetti (Livorno), Italy.

The facility is part of the PASS4CORE-ITA project, funded by the European Union’s CEF-Transport programme, and is located near the Florence–Pisa–Livorno motorway, a few minutes from the Vespucci freight village, a key logistics hub linking the Tyrrhenian coast with central Italy.

Designed to comply with European standards, the site aims to improve working conditions for HGV drivers by providing a secure, fully equipped rest area.

The truck park will be completely fenced and monitored by 77 CCTV cameras operating 24/7. It will feature controlled access, automatic number plate recognition, and pedestrian turnstiles to enhance security for both vehicles and cargo.

Driver amenities will include a relaxation area, showers, toilets, laundry facilities, free Wi-Fi, vending machines, a restaurant, and a motel. Additional services include a mechanical workshop, a certified weighbridge, and a refuelling station offering LPG and LNG.

The new site is being introduced in response to a longstanding shortage of secure truck parking in Italy. According to recent estimates, the country faces a shortfall of over 70% in safe parking spaces for HGVs. Many drivers are currently forced to stop in unregulated areas, increasing risks to personal and cargo safety.

Vespucci Truck Village is intended as a scalable model for other logistics hubs, aiming to reduce risks associated with unplanned stops, improve route planning, and enhance the overall efficiency and safety of the road haulage sector.

The project also supports logistical, environmental, and social sustainability, by easing traffic in urban and port areas and ensuring compliance with EU Regulation CE 561/2006 on driving and rest times.
