Global shipping giants Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd have announced key service updates impacting transatlantic and European trade routes. Maersk is launching a new direct service between North Europe and Philadelphia, while Hapag-Lloyd is implementing a surcharge adjustment for shipments to West Africa starting February 2025.

Maersk expands Atlantic Service Portfolio

Maersk has revealed significant changes to its Europe–North America coverage, including the introduction of the TA5 service, set to commence in February 2025. The TA5, operating outside the Gemini cooperation, will offer a direct link between key European ports—London Gateway, Hamburg, Rotterdam, and Antwerp—and Philadelphia. The inaugural TA5 sailing, the PUERTO LIMON EXPRESS 508W, is scheduled to depart London Gateway on February 19, 2025.

In addition, Maersk is revising its TA3 service by adding a Norfolk call while removing Philadelphia. The updated TA3 rotation will now include Southampton, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Wilhelmshaven, Newark, Norfolk, Baltimore, and St. John. Furthermore, the TA10 service will debut on February 13, 2025, with the EMMA A 507W making its first call at Ambarli.

Hapag-Lloyd adjusts emergency surcharge

Hapag-Lloyd has announced an adjustment to its Emergency Space Contingency Surcharge (ESC) for shipments from North Europe to West Africa. Effective February 10, 2025, the surcharge will be set at €550 per container and will apply to all gated-in containers until further notice.

The surcharge covers a wide range of European countries, including Germany, the UK, and France, with destinations across West Africa such as Nigeria, Ghana, and Senegal.
