Garmin unveils smartwatch dedicated to lorry drivers

GPS and tech-wearables firm Garmin has unveiled a new model of smartwatch that it says is dedicated to truckers. The Instinct® 2 - dēzl™ Edition contains features such as live tracking of driving times and loyalty point balances at US-based truck stops.

In the words of Garmin themselves, the watch is “this rugged smartwatch tracks health metrics, provides access to short-break workouts and helps promote a healthy over-the-road lifestyle.”

Two of the key features are nonetheless tailored towards truckers based in the US.

One is for the device to pair with the dēzl™ app for access to loyalty program information with Love’s Travel Stops and Pilot Flying J Travel Centers. The other is the ability to receive notifications of upcoming U.S. weigh stations and bypass decisions via an active PrePass® account and use the dēzl app on your compatible smartphone.

The watch is is said to be “built tough to handle the long-haul challenges of life on the road” and has a battery life of 28 days when in smartwatch mode. It also contains health tracking features as well as workout instructions designed for legal driving break durations. Moreover, it can make contactless payments and control media players on other devices.

Whether these features will be enough to entice truckers to make the purchase is another question. Available for €399.99 in Europe and £349.99 in the UK, it isn’t exactly the most competitively priced smartwatch on the market.
