Smoking in the cab in the Netherlands banned from January 1st 2022

While an employer may have provided a designated smoking area in 2021, all smoking areas in businesses must be closed in 2022. As the cabin of the HGV is considered a workplace, smoking will be forbidden there, too.

The amount of the fine for a violation of the tobacco law can vary from 450 euros to 450,000 euros per violation.

The Netherlands is not the only country in Europe that has made strict laws on smoking in vehicles.

As we reported earlier, Italy is planning to ban drivers’ smoking too – however, for a very different reason. While in the Netherlands it is about people’s right to smoke-free workplaces, in Italy, the distraction smoking causes is the main reason behind the decision.
